Hi all. I am about to start building that ginormous battery bank that was discussed here almost a year ago (damn time flies!). The bank is composed of 96 Surrette 2 KS 33PS batts. that will be used purely as backup. Here is the issue: The battery bank is arranged in an upside-down horseshoe shape (when looking from above with the battery room door at the bottom) with the inverter at the bottom-right of the horseshoe (on the right as you walk in the door). The 2 volt batteries are strung in 4 strings of 24. My plan was to arrange the strings such that all the positives are at the bottom of one end of the horseshoe and all the negatives are at the other end. I would then tie the terminals together with 4/0 and bring the home runs off of opposite strings with parallel 4/0 cable (i.e. if the positive home runs come from string 1 then the negatives come from string 4). The issue is that the negative terminals will be about 15' from the inverter while the positive terminals will be about 5' from the inverter. I had thought that this would not be a problem because the total distance of current flow for each string would be the same but but I was told today by Matt Tritt that this is not the case. Considering that the inverter and battery rack locations can not be changed, what is my best course of action? Use 250 kcmil cable? Bigger? I'll say again that these batteries will never be used except during exercising every 6 months and in the case of a catastrophy, at which point the bank had better work damn well. I couldn't quite tell which part of my plan Matt found more offensive, the length of the home runs in total (20') or the fact that they were of differing lengths (15' and 5'). He did suggest, though, that I inquire here as to the bast way to proceed. Any thoughts? Andrew Truitt NABCEP certified PV installer Standard Solar Inc.
