I met up with Dennis Ramsey who some of you may remember from his articles in HP about RE electrification atsome Buddhist monasteries. What better adventure for me in my "spare time" than to volunteer some service here in Asia?! We flew into a little airstrip village and trekked 5 hours (and 200 years back in time) to one of his ongoing projects -- Thubden Choling Monastary (search it if you wish). They have a hydro system that works very well, but for one problem. Part of the penstock pipe is stiff black plastic (we think PVC) During coldest of winter, it tends to break when it contracts. I'm looking for a solution. Perhaps an expansion joint? The pipe is 16 cm OD, 5mm wall. The plastic portion of the pipe is the upper (guestimating) 100m (300 ft) long, with about 30m (90 ft) drop. BTW, Dennis and I will eventually be writing about this. I have many photos already. Anyone who wishes to network on this topic, write to me off-list.
