    <p>I also recently purchased a Variac.  They are really nice for
      dialing in voltage, especially when testing old AC equipment. 
      Line voltage here is almost 125 vac these days, while old tube
      equipment was designed for 110 vac.   Its also a great way to slow
      down power tools for better control.  So a Variac has lots of
      uses  besides load control. You just have to be careful because it
      can output up to 145 vac.  I plug a Kill A Watt meter into the
      output to double check the voltage, as the markings on the control
      and the on board meter are not accurate.  <br>

            We'll use a small inverter and switchable AC light bulbs for
            load so that it stays constant at the 25A Trojan wants to
            see, and in the future we'll be able to adjust it for
            amperage by switching in and out more light bulbs. <br>
