Trojan L 16s have a known issue with premature cell failures. The
T105s seem to still be fine, but I won't sell the L16 anymore.
SG readings don't even matter when you have an obvious cell
failure. Its like doing blood work on a corpse.
The batteries were tested with a glass bulb, turkey baster type
hydrometer. The SG read higher than the scale on all the
batteries. The
electrolyte was clear. The batteries were not too old, maybe three
years,
with some newer ones, as others in the bank had failed. The
corrosion was
notable. I did not install the batteries, so don't know if the
battery
jumpers were cleaned at installation. Could terminal corrosion
have
aggravated the problem in anyway?
How are you reading the SG?

Hello Wrenches,

I was analyzing a string of 8 Trojan L-16 batteries with badly
corroded
terminals. The specific gravity read perfect on each battery.
Two of the
batteries read low voltage; about 4.2 volts. It seems like one
cell's
worth of voltage wasn't showing up on each battery. Has anyone
seen this
before?

What would cause this? How can the specific gravity be right?

Thanks,
