My logic about raising the end amps is that it would shorten the
amount of time spent at gassing voltage in absorption by allowing
the controller to shift to float a bit sooner. It's an idea, and I'm
not sure whether it's a good one -- a compromise to reduce the time
spent gassing, especially when the client is away and loads are
light. What do you think?<br>

My original request was for opinions about working with higher
charge rates with larger arrays and smaller banks. However, in the
particular case that prompted this thread, the client has a large
bank: 16 cells, 32V system, 1690 amp-hours. It's one of Windy's
original systems from the early 1980s, updated over the years. It
was originally based around a rebuilt Jacobs Wincharger, thus the
32V, with a dozen early French 55W Photowatt modules (all of which
continue to perform like new after 30 years), and a handful of other
modules added over the years. The Jake was maintained well over the
decades, but when it recently failed the client chose to add more PV
rather then repair it, given that we're all getting older and
there's no next generation coming along to climb towers and service
50 year old birds. So I added 1.68 kw in six Solarworld 280s. I
think that it's more an issue of going from a quite small array and
little energy use - the clients are currently overseas - to a larger
array and more time spent at gassing voltages, and changing old
habits. This is still less than a C/20 charge rate.<br>

The charge controller that I added with the new array is a Midnite
Classic. I did not add the Whizbang Jr. but I could. Please teach
us, Jay (and other Wrenches): given the IBE 1690 A-hr FLA cells,
where would you set the VPC and end of charge time/amps? <br>
