The fusing of the disconnect has more to do with protecting the wire from the inverter to combiner. If the wire size is sufficient to handle to the current from the inverter or array (Isc x 1.56 x # of strings) (both the inverter and array max currents are about the same so use the array since you can calculated it), then no overcurrent protection is needed on the wire. Most Trace Tech installations use disconnects without fuses unless the inspector doesn't believe the manufacturer on the fault current contribution of the inverter.

The Sunny Boy has been tested and it will not backfeed a fault in the
array and this is why we can use an unfused disconnect..

--What about using a Trace Technologies 20 kW inverter with one or two fused combiner boxes feeding into the inverter?  Would the output of the combiner boxes need to go through a fused disconnect before it goes into the inverter or can the disconnect be unfused like the SB example?
