Chris, We have done this a number of times.  Beware, on one occasion though
we got bit by the inspector. Our alternate supply (inverters etc) did not
have enough nameplata capacity to support all the loads that might be
possible. In my case it did no good to explain that this was an emergency
backup and the customer would be sure to shed loads as necessary.  My
customers want whole house backup- but the inspectors may derail. You might
run your plan by the planning dept and get your configuration approved in
writing.
