Repeat 100 times, "my time is worth money." In accordance with the prophecy, Home Depot is going to start displaying Siemens at select stores in California. Home Depot has a new CEO from GE who did not get Jack Welches’ job. Major plans to buy up major electrical suppliers expanding the Home Depot empire from do-it-yourselfer to supplying major builders - the crystal ball sees Square D in their pocket and the small electrical supply houses bought up and/or in trouble. The toilet, the roof, the cabinets, and grid connected solar electric systems will be farmed out to subcontractors picked by the Home Depot. They got financing for the toilets and inverters. "To the pioneers go the arrows and to the settlers go the land."

This is the future - there are alternative futures for contractors/designers who realize what their time and knowledge is worth.

Ask yourself and your customer, "What makes a successful job?" then repeat "My time is worth money." Don’t leave your office without a bill for time. Don’t spend more than an hour in your office with a new client without tripping the meter.

The following people give free estimates: taxi drivers, carpet cleaners, insurance companies, and auto body part shops. Doctors, lawyers, and accountants provide a service, have a license, and have liability and overhead and don’t give free estimates or design work.

Friends, family, good former customers or clients, and poor indigenous people are exceptions to "no free estimates and design work." How much time is left?
