Tankless water heaters don't save money inspite of their propaganda. They only save space - not  money - modern water heaters are so efficient you have to cut them off for 72 hours to save any money.  The research has been done by Universities and energy agencies. It is an urban myth.Gator Tom
Interesting viewpoint... All new water heaters come with an "Energy Factor" rating. This is a simple measure of efficiency that compares the energy output in Btu/hr of hot water, to the energy input in Btu/hr of gas (or electricity).  A higher Energy Factor means fewer Btus get wasted, so you use less of them.  The minimum DOE Energy Factor standard for a new tank-type gas water heater is .54 (and the installed average is below that).  The very best tank-types available are .65. http://gils.doe.gov:1782/cgi-bin/w3vdkhgw?qryLRF0nqNA8;doecrawl-022778

Tankless water heater have Energy Factors of .69 to .80. http://www.controlledenergy.com/consumer/aquastar/tankless.html
This tells me that tankless heaters are 20%-30% more efficient.  How can this be an uban myth?
