I have a customer who already had a 22 kW kohler
controlled by a automatic transfer switch. We added solar and a dual SW
inverter system to the house. Due to the size of the existing generator
and existing house wiring configuration I can't run the generator into
AC2 on the SW's. There are loads on the main panel that he would like to
run still that shoudn't be ran of the inverters.
I am trying to figure out a way to prevent the
generator from running when the grid is down and the batteries are
charged while allowing the generator to start when (as) the batteries
become depleted. The customer is adamant about this being
automatic. I could defeat the automatic transfer (ASCO Brand)
switch and put a E-Meter with LLO option on the two-wire start system but
then it will not exercise the generator and won't be a automatic transfer switch
anymore which means that we could start the gennie with a E-Meter but have to
manually throw the 200 amp double pole-double throw swicth inside the
ASCO which requires opening the switch with tools. This is not an
option. Conversations with ASCO have helped some but I still need a little
more help. I can put a line voltage (over 12 volts) relay down stream of
the ASCO on the 2-wire start system. This relay would be NC as long as
there was line voltage which would allow the ASCO to perform the weekly exercise
cycle automatically. When the grid went down this relay would open and not
allow the generator to start even thought the ASCO was telling it to. ASCO
says that the dp-dt inside the transfer switch will move to the generator side
regardless of the generator starting and that no harm will come from opening the
two-wire start system circuit downstream of the ASCO. Here is where I
really need the help. Assuming the line voltage relay is open I am trying
to figure out a way to make the E-Meter (or anything else tied to SOC, voltage
or amphrs.close a relay which would be in Series? (Parallel?) with the 12 volt
side of the line voltage relay.
Any thoughts? Totally different idea to do
this? Remember it has to be totally automatic.
