Travis, I think you just might be onto
something there. I don't know how many of us small timers could travel for
work (someone has to be here to mind the shop), but your idea might be a good
way to solve the problem of too much help or not enough help. I personally
know two young men who have worked for me who might be thrilled at the prospect
of wandering around working RE installations. And, they're not totally
unskilled, either. After nine years in business, I'm on my sixth or
seventh apprentice currently. All of them have received some good training
and instruction, but have moved on. Then, there are two messages on my
answering machine now from journeymen electricians wanting to work on RE.
There's no way I can offer full-time work to either of them, but, if there were
a place for them to sign up and wait for the call, I'll bet they would.
A side benefit from
this setup would be the sharing of information. As helpers drift around
working for several people, different methods and installation ideas would tend
to drift around with them. I think there's potential here. Perhaps
another way for IPP to function as a clearinghouse of sorts for members? I
think IPP should charge a resonable finders fee for maintaining a data base and
making the connections between people.
Then, my right brain kicks in with all
kinds of questions.......I assume that payment to employees would be at a rate
and method up to each installing Wrench..Workers Comp. or not, unemployment
insurance or not, apprentice registration or not. Travel costs?
Agreements would have to be one-on-one, I think.
Yeah, let's work on
this some.....
