Also, beware that the RJ45 connectors have two types depending on the wire. 
One of for stranded with a single pierce and the other is for solid with a 
fork type. If you use a single pierce on a solid wire it usually breaks the 
wire and it will likely be intermittent. This also applies to RJ11 (4 pin) 
and RJ12 (6 pin). 
  
  I know this from experience with lots of intermittent network and RS485

  I also think it's a great skill to put in your toolkit but it does depend 
on your eye sight. 
  
  
  
  
  If you do decide to fabricate your own, I recommend pass-through ethernet 
connectors.  This really helps to verify color codes, and makes it much,
