[RE-wrenches] After market SMA TL inverter shade covers

Hi Wrenches.

Yes, our product is NEMA 6, so is pretty robust once the DC and AC cables are connected. That said, our M215 Installation and Operation Manual states that the microinverters should not be installed in a location that allows for "long term exposure to direct sunlight." The challenge with north facing locations is that the sun does pass to the north of direct overhead for several hours a day in the summer months. Depending on the amount of exposure during the summer afternoons, this could be problematic.

See page 18 of the manual:

Cordially,

“Don’t get me wrong: I love nuclear energy! It’s just that I prefer fusion to fission. And it just so happens that there’s an enormous fusion reactor safely banked a few million miles from us. It delivers more than we could ever use in just about 8 minutes. And it’s wireless!”

Hi Bill and Benn,

Those micros are rated nema 6, which is submersible rated.

I”m curious which element/s they are referring to?

Benn,

Just curious, if they are on a north facing wall at your latitude (Edmonton?) they shouldn't ever see any sun or just the tiniest bit. Considering the normal location of micros it seems some wind and rain should be expected whether under a module or under a north facing eave. Enlighten me.

We are working on a service call for an enphase system (installed by others) where the 9 inverters are located, exposed to the elements, on rack on a north facing wall (rooftop equipment enclosure). The modules are installed about 75' away as decorative(?) awnings for a downtown penthouse suite.
So far about 3 of the enphase inverters (M215's I believe, would have to double check) have failed and have been replaced and I recently was on the service call where enphase determined that 4 more would need to be replaced as well.
Enphase is claiming that the inverters are failing because they are exposed to the elements.
We are in the process of designing a cover for them that would provide at least as much protection as a module would.

We had some problems last year with some of the fronius primos leaking in rain / wind conditions. Customer had a local shop tig weld an aluminum shell / box that went around the unit. Had a shelf at the top that stuck out like the brim of a hat. Worked great. We had also looked for something and this custom made box was reasonably priced, looked great and solved the leaking issue. If you want pictures let me know.
