This is a premature failure, possibly a manu defect and may be addressed under a prorated wttee. That being said corrosion in a L16 type of battery can be caused by customer over filling the battery causing excessive electrolyte to stay on the top of the battery or bad post seal. in older batteries excessive internal cell pressure, caused by heavy charging cycles causing the vent in the cap to become plugged w/ lead sulfate, forcing gas out around the post seal. I would say that this is the leading cause of corrosion. Check w/ Trojan and see if they are interested in a warrantee.

The batteries were not too old, maybe three years, with some newer ones, as others in the bank had failed. The corrosion was notable. I did not install the batteries, so don't know if the battery jumpers were cleaned at installation. Could terminal corrosion have aggravated the problem in anyway?
