I'm a Generac service tech and have some experience installing gaseous
generators (their term). I don't have any experience with freezing, being
in the Caribbean.
Virtually every installation not designed by a tech will have fuel piping
that is too small. The 20KW Generac Guardian needs a minimum 3/4" pipe but
we typically install 1" TRACPIPE to allow for more volume. I have seen
plumbers install two lengths of 4ft flexible pipe designed for stoves. A
domestic stove requires about 50K btu/hr, a 20KW LPG generator requires
about 400,000 btu/hr.

We normally use twin stage regulators but if the run is long we may use two
separate stages. As the intermediary stage is higher pressure it can use a
smaller pipe size.

As I understand it, the larger pipe before the generator allows the gas to
smooth out any standing waves or pulses.
