Here's a common example of a cheap inverter installation in an RV. A 600 watt inverter(right) and a grounded power cord feed a 2x4 electrical box (bottom). Then wire NMB to the transfer switch that feeds a AC distribution panel. The inverters have protection, sometimes GFI's for AC output. We have done many like this, using many inverter sizes, brands, types with no issues. Shore power is connected to the generator input so the Tx switch is normally closed to the inverter.
