[RE-wrenches] PV Powered vs SMA

Keith,

After going through several brands of inverters. We have decided to always use SMA for residential (grid-tie only) installations (Outback for Off-grid or batt b/u). Although the efficiency is practically the same, there is no comparison on reliability. Here in Florida, moisture, bugs and lightning are important variables we have to consider. The heavy transformer design (although not so fun to install) has proven to be worth its weight when it comes to power surges. The NEMA 3 enclosure for all operational components keeps out the bugs and moisture.
We have not had to change out one SMA inverter (yet).

As far as SMA's Web Box and monitoring...well it's not the most impressive but once you buy the chip and box the service is free and it works pretty well.
