The problem here it about 5 years ago they upped the snow loadrequirements from 40 to 60 p/sf so ANY thing added to the roof needs astructural upgrade.

It explains the rationalebehind why anything under 5 PSF is fine if the roof structure is standard(engineered trusses or typical rafter roof). Read it over a share it with yourjurisdictions. It alsorequires that you use a standard engineered racking system such as DPW, UniRac,or ProSolar.

Weare currently facing a city permitting bureaucracy that has recently discoveredsolar – that is, suddenly each department in the permitting and planreview departments is coming up with standards for PV systems. Some of thestandards, of course, make no sense. 
 
PVsystems typically add about three pounds per square foot to the loading on aroof. We are facing a city requirement for structuralengineering work for standard roof attachment if the mounting approachis to make penetrations into the roof structure. This is a typical requirementthat will only add considerable cost to each PV system, and we’re lookingto have our ammunition to fight this well stocked in advance. Specifically, arebuilding authorities in other jurisdictions requiring structuralengineering work for this type of roof attachment?
