[RE-wrenches] Ni-Cad batteries - venting required?

I hope that this helps, but far form complete:  Ni Cd batteries are called alkaline type, and use a water-alkaline electrolyte.  It does not participate in the reaction like lead acid.  If it is water based it will generate H2 and O2 on charging.  
so the out gas is the same as Lead acid,, and it will dry out if overcharged.
