The reason the solar magnetic pulse is so effective on the grid is the grid is so large.  The magnetic pulse is only a fraction of a Gauss but a few lines per centimeter is a lot of lines per 1000 sq. kilometers where the human sized items are concerned tiny fraction of a volt, on grand scale it is many thousands of volts.
