[RE-wrenches] Professional conduct

Unfortunately Todd, it seems that even among the Wrenches we are in the minority. It was not too long ago that the list was filled with posts to call your congress critter to pass the solar "stimulus" bill.

Too bad that so few people recall what happened the last time the government had large solar subsidies. I bet that less than 2% of those companies started up then are still in business.

And lately we have been seeing a lot of inquiries very similar to your experience with the group you refer to. And a quick internet search will turn up thousands of pages about how 30 watts of solar panels on the "next generation" car will save 43 trillion barrels of oil.

Unfortunately, this seems more and more like the fiasco created by the DHW credits 25 years ago. Sadly, this is what I expected and why I am opposed to incentive programs. Most people have no clue about energy or resource depletion issues.

For example, I was contacted by a group that runs the interpretative center at a local I-5 rest stop. They wanted to "put solar" on their building to reduce their power bill. As a part of the design/evaluation, I did a light energy audit of the facility. Their average energy use is 125 kWh a day for a ~800 sq foot building, open 12 hours a day! Everyone thinks we can add a few solar panels to buildings and everything can continue business as usual. It is frustrating to see the same old business as usual happening, while people expect different results.

  Todd
