Phil,

Not really a big fan of auto starting generator, especially when
no one is on-site. But for my remote clients that are not on site 24/7 I use
a two relay system with 12vdc coils. When the generator wants to start the
first relay starts the heater (big load) and also starts a time delay relay
with a setting of .1 to 60 minutes. After the timer times out the start
signal is given to start the generator. Feed back from generator installers
is they normally want 45 to 60 minutes of heat before starting the
generator. Keep in mind that you will want the start signal from the
inverter (normally based on voltage) to be a little higher than normal
because when you turn that block heater on it is going to use a ton of
power. Our temperatures up here in the Adirondacks’ can easily get into
-30F. Good luck.

Wrenches,

Do any of you cold-weather wrenchers have recommendations for a

propane-fired block heater for tough winter starting? Maybe even relay

controlled to start heating in anticipation of an inverter-controlled auto

start? Thanks.

cheers,

P.
