In my experience (since mid 1980's) L-16 size batteries last, about, 35%
longer than golf cart size batteries when comparing systems that are
identical except for the size battery. Plates in the L-16 are thicker and
last longer.

I have heard this from others and it always makes me curious as my
customers easily get 8 to 12 years out of L-16s. Perhaps it is common
for some L-16's to not get fully charged after use? I tend to set the
charge controller a bit on the high side and now that the MX-60 has an
auto equalize option, I set it up to EQ once a month and tell the
customer to judiciously watch the water levels. As long as they do not
go dry, these batteries seem very robust for off grid and on grid w/
backup use.
