battery-less VAWT [RE-wrenches]

Wrenches,

After starting this thread, doing research on the subject and hearing back
from wind Wrenches here is my response regarding the RFQ & design to combine
multiple VAWT's along with a 40 KW PV array on a commercial rooftop in the
Seattle area:

"... I¹ve spent considerable time looking into the current state of vertical
axis wind turbine (VAWT) availability, reliability, appropriateness, and
grid-tied options. As a result I cannot recommend using VAWT¹s in your
project. In summary, VAWT¹s mounted on the facility roof will be expensive
spinning art, that will likely incur high maintenance costs, could transmit
harmonic vibration, and could pose a liability hazard. VAWT¹s will only
produce reasonable energy output in high (storm) winds, which don¹t occur
often enough to generate much energy. There are very few installations in
the US, and no long-term installations that have stood the test of time.
Most VAWT manufacturers have not been in business long, which doesn¹t give
much comfort in depending on a warranty for backup. There are no direct
grid-connected VAWT models, and most are designed for 12 & 24-volt battery
systems (which means quite big conductors for voltage drop). Most
importantly, the available wind resource at the site at roof-top level will
almost certainly not be sufficient to justify wind power.

As an experienced consultant in the Renewable Energy Industry I feel that
it¹s my duty to recommend and demonstrate real, sustainable solutions for
energy production. I cannot conscionably recommend, design or install VAWT¹s
at the site, when the budget for wind would be more effectively, and
appropriately applied to the PV system."

The response from our EE contact at the project architectural-mechanical
design firm was positive and appreciative.
