Another approach is to add a relay.  Use a 240 V relay with the coil 
connected between the two phase wires of the generator (assuming 
single phase).  Use 2 fuses to protect the tapped wiring.  Piercing 
connectors can be useful to get the signal current from the phase 
wires.  Follow the rules on tapping for wires size from the piercing 
connectorl

Connect the 12 V positive to the common of the relay and take the 
feed off the N/O contact. This way you don't have to dig into a new 
generator, nor compromise factory connections.

I don't know if  installing the piercing connectors would hurt the 
warranty. On the other hand, piggy backing the wiring from other 
components could be a problem too.
