I have heard this from others and it always makes me curious as my 
customers easily get 8 to 12 years out of L-16s. Perhaps it is common 
for some L-16's to not get fully charged after use? I tend to set the 
charge controller a bit on the high side and now that the MX-60 has an 
auto equalize option, I set it up to EQ once a month and tell the 
customer to judiciously watch the water levels. As long as they do not 
go dry, these batteries seem very robust for off grid and on grid w/ 
backup use.
