Tankless misconceptions WAS: Demand heater for SHW backup [RE-wrenches]

Hi Todd,

I will stand by my comment that a _properly installed_ gas heater -
installed in a freezing climate - is no more likely to freeze than a
similarly located electric heater. The gas tankless will have a back draft
damper and sufficient pipe to eliminate the freezing problem. Moreover many
of the power vented models of gas tankless heaters today incorporate freeze
protection (one or more small heater(s)) mounted directly on the heat
exchanger. At this point the gas tankless can survive lower temperatures
than the electric tankless. I almost always recommend a direct vent machine.
When a direct vent is not available, constructing a field chase to
selectively take intake air from the outside will also accomplish the same
end result of efficient and reliable cold weather operation.

Bill
