Ground fault protection in 2008 Code (was Xantrex XW) [RE-wrenches]

Wrenches:

I wanted to add a brief comment on GFDI protection.
The 2008 NEC requires GFDI protection in all PV systems.
This is an expansion from the requirement for arrays mounted on
rooftops of dwellings.
There are a couple exceptions for smaller systems not mounted on the
building etc. but these are pretty limited.
In a case where the DC negative is bonded externally to the GFDI device
it effectively disables the GFDI function and so the external bond would
have to be removed.

Check with the respective equipment manufacturers for instructions on
how to handle multiple parallel charge controllers with GFDI protection
in each one. Depending on the design the parallel GFDI circuits may or
may not interact with each other in unanticipated ways. For example:
Will one GFDI fuse look like a ground fault to another controller ? If
a ground fault occurs in one array will it open the fuse in the other
controller ? If this happens will all the controllers shut down to stop
the fault current ?

Best Regards,

John Berdner
