Hi Kirk,
If the standing seams are the right shape, you might be able to
attach S-5! clamps to them to use as anchor points for your platform. Check
out the website for Metal Roof Innovations, LTD. in Colorado Springs, CO:
www.s-5solutions.com
They are the inventor of the S-5! clamp, which is designed to clamp on to
the seams of most standing seam metal roofs, and can be used as a
non-penetrating attachment device for the subsequent attachment of other
things to the roof (like snow dams, HVAC equipment, solar thermal systems,
and, oh yeah, PV modules too!). The S-5! website is full of great
information including testing and engineering data (the "seam-gripping
strength" testing will be of particular interest to you) and an extensive
list of different standing seam roofs, their profiles, and the corresponding
S-5! clamps.
NOTE: The set screws that hold the clamp in place are smooth and rounded
(stainless steel) and shouldn't penetrate the seam, but they will deform
some types of standing seams somewhat. I recommend checking the extent of
deformation in an inconspicuous spot to see if it's acceptable, first. With
a little touch-up paint, it might not even be noticeable.
ALSO NOTE: When properly installed, the S-5! clamp is not likely to be
pulled off a standing seam in any case, but the big question will always be
how well is that metal roof attached to the structure? We see a lot of good
installation standards with most commercial buildings, but residential
standing seam metal roofs can be all over the map in terms of attachment to
the structure. If it's a steep pitch, and you can't tell how well it's
attached, don't go hangin' on it!

Hello,
Does anyone know of a good way to attach to a standing seam (ala roof jacks)
so planks can be spanned across it?
thanks.
