The recommendation for the 2/0 AWG cable was based on using the FX3038 
with a 175 amp DC disconnect breaker.  If you are using a smaller 
breaker than you can use a smaller cable naturally. 

When the manual was written we were not confident on the time-delay of 
the 100 amp breakers for starting larger motors.  Since that time we 
have been able to source a 125 amp version which is better.  We are 
using this with the PS1 system and the VFX3648 with 1/0 AWG cables and 
it has been fine.  

The issue with cable heating is not that significant - especially on the 
shorter cable runs we have on our DC systems.
