It depends on your latitude. In southern California (lat=33 degrees), to be
completely safe (0% shading) space them 2X the vertical difference between
the top of the row in front (to the south) and the bottom of the row to the
north). For example, if the top of the row to the south is 18" and the
bottom of the row to the north is 8", the difference is 10" and the rows
should be spaced 20" apart.
