ground rod question [RE-wrenches]

Are there any unique methods or specialized equipment...

I constructed a device out of PVC pipe, just small enough ID to clear
the ground rod OD and long enough to completely cover it's length. I
cemented 2 90 deg. elbows, a shut-off and a female threaded garden hose
adapter.
It took 4 hoses in series to reach the faucet but the flow of water out
the end worked pretty well through even solid packed dirt to blast a
hole for the rod to 'fall' into. Eventually I hit hard stuff and the
last coupla feet took a 16 pound sledge.
I would consider using maybe a brazed on piece of 1/2 in emt for more
rigidity on ver.2. I also cut a 'fishmouth' on the business end of the
pvc and twisted back and forth while drilling.
