In discussions with other battery manufacturers, I've been told that the
primary cause of battery failure out of the gate is when the cell gets
formed in reverse--in other words, somewhere along the line the cell gets
built backwards. The cell will take an initial charge, will show up as
"normal" on the factory floor, but will fail after a short period of time.

Phil,
I was lucky enough to have that reversed formation problem on the one and
only set of Surrette batteries I have sold. It was the 4 volt big 300
pounders. It was great fun carting the bad ones away and paying to ship them back
for them to look at. I also had a low sg on another. Of course, they gave
the reason for the low sg at inadequate charging. I think they should make
it very clear in their sales literature that these batteries are not intended
for the average off-grid home with a single SW4024 or now the VFX3524. I
still have my best luck with T105's for the golf cart size and lately I am using
the Interstate UL16 which I believe is made by US Battery. I can't wait for
Windy's battery article but do feel we have read some of it already on this
thread. My basic feeling is that very few, if any, batteries live up to
their claims and I automatically de-rate all batteries at least 30 to 40% in my
system designs.
