Jeremy et al,

The Air Conditioning Contractors Assn. (ACCA) Manual J is a formidable
document (now in Edition 8 that would choke a hippo) that even the HVAC
industry doesn't adopt wholeheartedly. Possibly because of a lack of sales,
ACCA has wisely introduced a Manual J - AE (Abridged Edition) which is much
much simplified.

One benefit to either of the manual J programs is once you have entered the
standard building constructions (on your first useage) the subsequent
useages are almost automated.

Since ACCA still wants to _sell_ this abreviated program, perhaps Dan's
recommendation for free software is the way to go.

Hi;

I've got a copy of Manual J. Its overkill for most residential, but its
good. The problem is estimating your air infiltration losses without a
blower door test. Its almost not worth using Manual J without a good
infiltration number. Sort of like using a KWH meter to check all your
phantom loads and then winging a guess on the refrigerator.
Of course there is engineering software beyond Manual J too, but once
again without actual measurements of the actual construction used, its
not going to be very accurate. (ie what if the guys that were supposed
to put in the vapor barrier didn't seal around the windows and doors, or
the cable guy came back and hacked holes in it?) All those estimated R
values used in all of the estimators are only that: estimated, so I'd go
with what Dan recommended.
