PV input redundancy--that is, assuming there is any
winter sunlight up there to be redundant with. Split the array, and run dual
charge controllers, so that a single failure is unlikely to cause a lack of
charging.
I have even entertained the idea of a vertical panel without a charge
controller with an output low enough to never overcharge a large battery bank.
Having to "eat" the cost of 8 Trojan L16P's when the solar panels got covered
with snow or the MX60 quit... still not sure which happened first... has led me
also to embrace the K.I.S.S. principle. Can't have problems with a charge
controller if there isn't one. The customer specifically asked me if he should
bring the batteries home for the winter from his camp in the Northern
Adirondacks. I told him that they should be fine as there would be adequate
charging from 4 Sanyo 190 panels. So I thought!!
