I agree with the sensibility of using battery powered smoke detectors, 
plus the hard wired ones claim (on the box) to consume 6 watts each, 
which adds up to a gigantic load in a house with lots of them. The only 
problems with the battery powered detectors is that:

1) They cannot be configured so if one goes off the others do as well and

2) Should there be a fire, it is possible some insurance companies will 
use that as an excuse to weasel out of honoring the claim.
