John, I think that was a typo on Windy's part. It's the 2-wire start that is
only made in the smaller sizes.

Windy,

We have a 1-1/2 horsepower conventional AC pump in a well on some property
we own, and we have a working 3-wire start. (I say "working" with some
certainty, since I had to troubleshoot the thing this past season, when the
pump was tripping out the breaker due to a silt slug that it had to
clear. This is an infrequently used well.) So if I understand what
you're saying, your comment about 3-wire starts only applying to 1/2 or 1/3
HP is incorrect.

In fact, my experience with AC motors in general, of all sorts, is that
starting windings/circuits become more common as you go up in size, because
the real magnitude of the starting amperes involved becomes more and more
of an issue in any given application.

And the start-up surge on our well pump, when working properly, seemed to
be nowhere near 8X on the 3-wire start, maybe more like 1-1/2 to 2X,
although I might not have been grabbing the absolute peak, I can't remember
for sure. But I doubt that our Honda 5KW genny would ride through an 8X
surge on the 1-1/2 HP pump, given the way that it belched and wheezed while
the pump was in the process of clearing the silt slug.
