Jay:
First, figure out how much shadowing you are willing to allow. Our usual
standard is to preserve full sun from10:00 AM to 2:00 PM on winter
solstice. After you decide the hours within which you wish to preserve sun
exposure, find out what angle above the horizon the sun will be at that
hour. Try http://susdesign.com/tools.php or, if you want to do this in the
field, download this tool for your Palm
pilot: http://home.znet.com/gregbell5/.
Once you know the sun angle, you need to solve for the right
triangle. Height is the vertical height of the shade source. Adjacent
angle is the sun angle. The adjacent side is the inter-rack spacing. For
a diagram, got to my resources page and click on Level Ground Trig
Solution: http://mpandc.com/resources/resources.html.
How adept are you at trig? If not so much, Plan A is to chalk this out on
your driveway.
Plan B is to use a web (http://www.selectsmart.com/darex/triangle.html) or
Palm tool (http://www.multiology.com/palm/index.htm).
Plan C is old fashioned trig with a calculator.
Good luck and let me know if this helps.

PS: I really recommend the Palm tools. I can figure out stuff in the
field that I used to have to put off until I got back in the office.
