I've lived with and otherwise observed a variety of PV-powered
evaporative (swamp) coolers here in the Santa Fe region. They work
fine whenever the humidity is low, and are only a nuisance when it's
high, because the only thing they accomplish is to further humidify
the air. Every promotion I've every seen from respectable evap cooler
makers states that it is only applicable in dry climates. I received
a call from SolCool a few years ago. The fellow was straight up about
it being an evaporative pre-cooler. When I saw that their web site
made no mention of the fundamental limitation, I lost respect. I'm
amazed if they are promoting any such thing outside of the arid west.
Nobody else does.
