That's correct-- bits of fiber mixed into the mastic. I've never been
tempted to add extra mesh.I tried duct mastic without fibers once, and got '
stretch marks ' as it dried. Also not as easy to put on thick.
Yes it can be messy, which is why I mentioned pre-applying the mastic. good
job for enthusiastic new helpers--
Mastic is acrylic latex based, water cleanup.
Just being careful does the trick, although that's easier said than done
while stretched out on a hot roof. Having a color that approximates the roof
color helps.
Not as messy as plastic roof cement !

Just to be clear: you are not talking about duct tape with the fiber. Nor
are you discussing mastic with reinforcement tape meshing, but mastic with
bits of fiber in it. Or do you add reinf. mesh tape for some areas, like
wider, flat, clean, accessible? What about the "messy" factor? Any
special methods for ease of clean-up? Just being careful do the trick?

Peter- and all others getting into SHW--

I've used foil tape also, until I went back to mastic.
One of my very first systems-- 1977 ?, we used Rubatex insulation and the
mastic they sold-- expensive ! Over the years we did a variety of coverings.
About 8 years ago, due to tree growth, we moved the collectors to a higher
roof. That mastic was as tough as the day it went on ! A pain to cut into
actually.
The foil tape I've sometimes used doesn't last near as well. Adhesive dries
out, foil dulls and corrodes . Paint , because it is thin, will deteriorate
in 5-10 years also. Mastic can go on much thicker. Be sure it's fibered.
If the insulation needs to be slit to apply after soldering and pressure
testing, we glue back to gether with a caulk like OSI Quad. Not compatible
with asphalt . We seal penetrations with black silicone from C R Laurence
Co which has a very handy removable tip so cured silicone can be cleared
from the tip.

Now if we could just be assured the roof it's on will last as long as the
collectors! Same goes for PV panels only more so because of the extra area
and costs !

PS-- Why pay for 3/4 wall insulation and then compress to 1/2" ?

And welcome all to the world of solar thermal.

Ken
