We have seen this pulsation effect on some generators and have a couple 
of things you can do to address it - its usually an issue of the 
generator's voltage regulation control.  I have improved it on sme with 
the addition of a motor run capacitor (47 or so MFD). Adjusting the 
charge rate down a small amount also can make a big difference.  

There are some very nice ONAN inverter/generators (the QD series) up to 
12 kW.  Several of our bus conversion customers are using these with our 
inverters and I know many of the busses do run BioDiesel in them 
(usually for some of the hollywood/musician crowd).  

In the long haul trucking marketplace I have seen mre and more of the 
small Subaru-Robins diesels.  Not inexpensive but apparently can rack up 
high hours without much problem.
