Hey nik;
       dan here. Seems to me you'd need to get the mounting feet securely 
attached to the roof sheathing. I'd guess it'd go something like; strip the 
shingles back to the sheathing, lay down an ice and water shield (bitchathane -- 
maybe even membrane), attach the mounts (into framing), than some kind of  
flashing kit (boots / flashing membrane?) , and then reshingle. either you or a 
slate roofer. as you know,  slate cracks if you look at it, so I'd get 
experianced help if i could. but it's not rocket science. maybe check with the rack 
manufacturer. hope this helps. db
