Hi Paul et al.

I've used both SunFrost and off-the-shelf Swedish refrigerators. Today there
are domestic refrigerators who approach the efficiency of the Swedish one I
have. First the SunFrost used the least energy, but I quickly add it didn't
provide great satisfaction whilst doing so. We had a single compressor R12
model and if the freezer was cold enough for hard ice cream the vegetable
got crispy. If the fridge was at the right temperature the freezer wasn't
cold enough.

We have used a Vestfrost two compressor fridge/freezer for over a decade now
with very happy results. Fridge and freezer have separate controls and work
perfectly, we make up for the loss of efficiency (vs SunFrost) by turning
off the fridge for the coldest parts of our winter when we don't really need
refrigeration. The freezer, of course, runs all the time.

I've seen many successful conversions of chest freezers to low-energy
refrigerator and they all work well and share the common thread of being
un-ergonomic to my old fashioned ways. There's just too much shuffling
around to get to stuff on the bottom. Bottom line I'd shop carefully at the
dread big box stores and look for the every day efficiency leader and keep
it full.

Regards,

Ezra

Hey Paul;

Remember me from Windy's gatherings? We found the most efficient fridge
for the money, is a small AC chest style deep freeze (Danby, etc.) with
an external thermostat (available from Backwoods Solar). We've seen
amazingly low energy use (under 500 watt-hr/ day) for a fraction of what
Sunfrosts cost. Add a couple of 1 gallon water jugs frozen in our winter
nights and you can cut that energy use to below 300 watt-hrs, depending
of course on where its located in your house.
Downside: the ergonomics are not as good with a chest style model. See
a fridge comparison article at
http://www.solarray.com/TechGuides/Refrigerators_T.php
or at www.backwoodssolar.com. <www.backwoodssolar.com>

Peace,

Ray Walters
