Keith,
You can downgrade the main breaker of the panel to keep within the
NEC-mandated restriction. The limitation is on the busbars of the panel.
Therefore, you can source up to 240A of current into a 200A panel (20% over
capacity).
If you downgraded the main breaker to 150A, then you'd have 90A of
"headroom" for solar sourcing breakers. This is more than enough for a 10kW
solar system. Since on most days both the solar system and the grid are
available to feed power to the panel, the 150A limit of the main breaker
should never be reached during the day.
The only time you might have a problem would be at night when the solar
system is offline and if the customer turned on every load in the house,
they might have the potential of tripping the 150A main. But it's unlikely,
especially if you warn them of the risks.
Good luck with it,
Tom McCalmont

We have a client that has an existing 200 amp electrical service. They are
doing a complete remodel, addition with some heavy AC and other stuff-
pools, water features etc.
The engineer did a calculation of 298 amps. The work involved to bring the
service up to 325 amps (next standard size here) is lengthy, costly, and
somewhat challenging.
We are installing 10KW of PV, 4 - 3048 Outback's, and a small battery
system.
They are eager to not upgrade to 325 amps, and I know the limitations
outlined, Per NEC- 690.64 B 2 exception regarding the busbar rating.
Any thoughts on this?
(Bill..you might have some good suggestions..)
Thanks
Keith Cronin
