Walt,

You should be perfectly OK doing what you propose. In fact, that's  
the way most of us prefer to do it now. I believe that you should NOT  
connect your parallels at the battery terminals if you don't have to.  
It's best to avoid stacking lugs at batteries so you have less metal  
junctions to give opportunities to possible corrosion.

Also, it allows a service person in the future to disconnect one  
battery bank without causing any sparks at the battery.
