Well drillers really like to sell big pumps. 1.5 hp is probably about
average. They make more money on bigger pumps, and they'll never get a
callback even after the homeowner installs his 5-acre automated watering
system.
I'm surprised nobody's mentioned efficiency yet. Multi-stage AC pumps
usually manage a miserable 10-20% efficiency. The helical-rotor pumps (like
the Grundfos SQ Flex or the Lorentz) hit almost 50% efficiency. That
standard AC pump might be a lot cheaper at time of installation, but when
you've gotta throw 3 to 4 times as much energy down the hole...you'll pay
for it sooner or later!
