For calculating window overhangs, I like to use the NREL formulas found 
at http://rredc.nrel.gov/solar/old_data/nsrdb/bluebook/.  Look up the 
nearest city.  Toward the top of the data is a section labeled "Shading 
geometry in demensionless units".  Then it lists (for Spokane, WA) 
"Window: 1.00, overhang: 0.754, vertical gap: 0.326".  So, for a window 
1 unit high, the vertical gap to the overhang should be .326 units 
high, and the roof overhang should be .754 units horizontally.  This 
provides the best combination of summer shading and winter passive 
solar gain for this latitude.
