Hello Jeremy
Last time I checked a 10 HP DC motor was very
expensive.
How about a 3 phase 208 volt motor with a VFD, it
might be cheaper.  I would guess the battery voltage
would have to be about 300 volts, the battery would
feed the DC bus of the VFD directly, You would have
good efficency over most of the range, but not as much
stall torque. Most of the time we can run these motors
from 180 to 3600 RPM, (for a 1800 rpm motor) which
matches many auto engine ranges. (a cooling fan helps
with low speed operation)
