I've had excellent luck with the last couple generations of NiMH AA cells and chargers. I'm trying my first batch of AAA cells now and they seem to be working out well.

Several good brands of cells out there now. <http://www.imaging-resource.com/ACCS/BATTS/BATTS.HTM> is a good place to start.

I am very impressed with the Maha chargers, particularly the C-401FS (runs off 12V DC, has individual charge circuits) and the new C-204W (builtin switchmode AC supply, latest charge profile, but still charges in pairs.) <http://thomasdistributing.com/> has competitive pricing but there are lots of dealers.
