That was a long time ago then I was working on some C+D type single
cells (memory?) those you could get to the bottom to get a reading, hard
to do with any other cells. 
The point about the electrolyte and plates would probably be correct but
the bubbling would stir that up just like it relieves the
stratification.

I have some single cells here, I will see if I can get a tube to the
bottom to see what I can get for readings without stirring them up.

Electrolyte touching the plates can have a different specific gravity
than 
free flowing electrolyte. What readings did you get when you measured 
electrolyte at different levels in cells that were not been equalized?
